NOTE: Fearsome Critters is an arts journal for Millennial and Gen Z artists. While we do not have a strict age range, we do ask that you only submit if you were born around the early 1980s. We also have a special interest in work by traditionally and currently under-represented people, but we do not exclude those who do not identify as such.
If accepted, your piece will be considered for the 2021 Courtney Valentine Prize, which comes with a $50 honorarium and a free physical copy of the journal.
Thank you for your interest in Fearsome Critters! We're excited to be accepting many forms of poetry: traditional forms, free-verse, experimental, song lyrics, etc. You are limited to 4 poems per cycle, though if you'd like to submit something in another category—such as fiction or visual arts—you are more than welcome to. Your submission should not contain any contact or personal information—just your work.
Please allow us 3 to 4 months to properly evaluate your work. You will be notified via Submittable and via e-mail once a decision has been made. We do allow simultaneous submissions, but please notify us as soon as part of or the entirety of your submission is accepted elsewhere.
We wish we could properly pay our contributors, but we are still establishing ourselves as a journal. Nevertheless, we do supply one free physical copy to a Top Contributor in each category: Visual Arts, Poetry, Nonfiction, Fiction, Script, and Hybrid Works. The Top Contributors are decided upon by the editors and notified prior to the magazine's publication. The physical magazine itself will be available for purchase via Amazon at a near-for-production cost.
VOLUME FOUR content will be steadily added to our website and promoted via Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms. Other than allowing us to do this, the rights of your work will revert back to you upon physical publication.
Submittable limits our no-cost submissions each month. Once we have hit our submission cap, we will apply a $2 Processing Fee to all subsequent submissions. (This amount is determined by Submittable, not us.) If we receive enough submissions and generate excess funds, we will put it directly toward VOLUME FOUR development, distribution, promotion, etc.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via email@example.com.
